A fictional account of the history and horrors behind the ghost of Miramont's Castle in Manitou Springs.

A short summary:

Miramont’s Ghost by Elizabeth Hall is a fictionalized historical mystery rooted in the lore surrounding Miramont Castle in Manitou Springs, Colorado. Drawing on regional history and legend, the novel explores the castle’s past through layers of secrecy, tragedy, and whispered horror.

As the mystery unfolds, the story moves between investigation and atmosphere, blending historical detail with ghostly elements. The novel leans into the sense of place, using the castle and its surroundings as both setting and symbol, where personal sins, social restraint, and long-buried truths refuse to remain hidden.

My favorite quote from the book:

"Diplomacy has much more to do with restraint; I think, that with speaking."
- Elizabeth Hall - Miramont's Ghost

Quote reading “Diplomacy has much more to do with restraint… than with speaking” by Elizabeth Hall over a dark, historic interior background.

Questions to ponder while reading:

Can you stand up for yourself?

Are you trapped by circumstances?

My review:

Miramont’s Ghost is an engaging historical mystery with thriller overtones, particularly effective in its atmospheric setting. The story is easy to slip into, and the historical elements provide a solid backbone for the narrative.

That said, the resolution was a point of frustration for me. The buildup creates strong expectations, and while the conclusion answers the central questions, it does so in a way that feels less satisfying than the journey leading up to it.

Still, the novel succeeds in making regional history feel alive and unsettling. For readers drawn to haunted places with real-world roots, this is a compelling and accessible read, even if the ending doesn’t fully land for everyone.
